Kite surfing is a relatively recent water sport, invented in the late 1990s in the windswept waters of Hawaii, and later exported even to the beaches of the upper Adriatic, like the 8 km-long strand in Lignano where kite surfing has become a must-do all year round.

Kite surfing requires special equipment: a board and a kite controlled using a bar.

In Lignano Sabbiadoro, Kite surfing is quickly gaining popularity and there are qualified schools where you can learn the sport with courses for adults and children.

During winter (from October to May), you can kite surf freely right along the length of Lignano Sabbiadoro beach, while in summer it is forbidden near the beach but is possible at the nearby, uninhabited Conchiglie island.

Conchiglie Island is situated just a few hundred metres from the Santa Monica boardwalk (better known for its picturesque Faro Rosso) and offers the beach with the strongest wind in all of Lignano Sabbiadoro, lifting all the Kite Boarders high in the sky.

From April/May to October, aspiring kiters are taken by qualified instructors in a dinghy as far as Conchiglie Island where – taking basic kite surfing courses – they can learn and improve their kite surfing techniques in total freedom and safety.

Conchiglie Island, with its golden sand and shallow waters, is the ideal spot for kite surfing lessons and practise. The sea wind will take you back what is a clear sandy beach perfect for onland exercises and equipment assembly.

Wakeboarding became popular in the US in the late 80s, and basically combines water skiing with snowboarding. Just like parasailing and stand up paddling, it rapidly spread to Italy and has become one of the staple water sports that can be enjoyed on the beaches of Lignano.

Wakeboarding involves holding onto a sling bar and standing on a board similar a snowboard. The wakeboarder is pulled by a motorboat and uses the boat's wake to do jumps and spectacular tricks.

Although it may seem like a challenging sport when you watch it, everyone can actually wakeboard. There are no age limits: the thrill of gliding on the waves is an experience that everyone should try! Moreover, it's so easy to learn that you can heartily enjoy wakeboarding on your first attempt, as it is easy to quickly improve and become practical with the board and sling bar.

The sport facility, stretching over around 12,000 square metres and immersed in nature, includes 5 clay courts, (known for how well they are maintained and for the speed of drainage in wet weather) a dual-purpose five aside football-tennis court with artificial grass, a gym and a mini-golf course with 18 holes immersed in the park that surrounds the facility. The changing rooms are inside the new stand, which was rebuilt in 2005 for the EYOF. The bar features a wide porch between the two central courts. The Club is also equipped with a large parking area and a sunbathing terrace. Booking is required.

Kayaking in Lignano Sabbiadoro is easy above all because it is an activity for everyone, even those trying a kayak for the first time. The city has numerous sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddle schools along the coast that offer kayaks and paddles for hire.

Spending an hour or more off the shores of Lignano Sabbiadoro while paddling in the sun is a pleasant way to spend a relaxing day on the beach, even more so if you reach the Red Lighthouse of Sabbiadoro, the Pagoda Bar of Pineta or the mouth of the Tagliamento River.

Kayaks are also perfect for those seeking total immersion in nature: kayaks are completely eco-friendly and let you discover a less-known side of Lignano Sabbiadoro, that of the Marano Lagoon and the mouth of the Stella River, paddling among waterfowl in their natural habitat and discovering traditional huts.

Kayak Experience is an organised tour that includes a boat ride from Lignano Sabbiadoro to Bilancia di Bepi, an old lagoon hut with its own mechanically-operated fishing net traditionally used to fish in the lagoon. Once you reach Bilancia di Bepi you leave the boat behind for kayaks, to then meander among the reeds and placid waters of the Stella River Nature Reserve.

After providing brief instructions on kayaking, the excursions are led by the owner of Bilancia di Bepi, Daniele, who has extensive knowledge of the local flora and fauna. He will guide you through the maze of reeds, including a stop at a typical lagoon hut.

Sailing is one of the most fascinating water sports of all time in Lignano Sabbiadoro. You can easily enjoy it here thanks to the numerous marine and sailing schools located along the beach.

In fact, sailing enthusiasts of all ages will find the ideal schools, rentals and stopping points for their sail boats in equipped areas just a few metres from the water in Lignano.

Everyone can enjoy sailing, including children starting at about 6-7 years of age in small boats; they learn how to relate with the sea and the wind while playing with the small trapezoidal sail of their boats. Furthermore, in recent years many social inclusion projects.

But what is the sport of sailing? First and foremost, it is essential to know how to swim to go sailing. Beyond that, there is no need for special skills or abilities to enjoy this sport as an amateur. Led by experienced instructors, during your adventure at sea you’ll learn sailing techniques, typical sailing jargon and about the different types of wind. Over time you’ll become good at interpreting the weather and sea conditions (which must always be taken into account to sail safely).

But above all, sailing teaches all those wanting to learn this wonderful sport something that goes beyond technical skills: by sailing, you learn to know and respect the marine environment, to know your limits, to collaborate with others and share experiences with the rest of the crew. In fact, on board sail boats a strong bond is created between the team members who learn to collaborate and help each other.

Sailing is therefore also a school of life that is also a wonderful way to spend some time during your summer holidays.

SUP (Stand Up Paddle) is a version of surfing where you stand on a board (a long board) and move along using a paddle. This sport has really grown in popularity in recent years all over the world.

Stand Up Paddle began in Polynesia and is very popular in Hawaii. However you don’t need to travel so far away to do it! SUP is also very popular in Lignano Sabbiadoro, with lots of schools along the seashore offering equipment hire, lessons and outings, plus other related events.

Stand Up Paddle is a cross between surfing and canoeing. From the former it takes the characteristic of, standing on a board,  gliding on the water and being able to ride a wave, with all of the techniques and fun of “surfing”. From the latter it borrows the use of the paddle, with all of the techniques and advantages that propulsion system.

SUP is very popular among surfers, windsurfers and kiters, who instead of waiting on the beach for the ideal conditions to practice their sport, like to ride the waves even on days when the wind is down. 

But the strong point of SUP is that anyone can do it, not just athletes and water sports “pros”, at any age and without any special training or requirements.

For those who get restless on the beach, SUP is an excellent alternative precisely because it is easy for everyone no matter what your physical condition, and it is excellent training for your muscles and for balance.

The really incredible thing about this sport is that you can do it on any body of water. Lignano Sabbiadoro, with the Adriatic Sea, the Marano Lagoon, the river Tagliamento and the river Stella, is an ideal spot. Stand up paddle means you can discover (or rediscover) nature’s treasures in a sustainable way and from a whole new perspective: from the sea, from the lagoon or from the river, standing on a board with a paddle in your hand, surrounded only by the lapping water, the breeze and the sound of birds singing.
